Aston Martin celebrates milestone with the first production DBX SUV rolling off the production line at the new facility in St Athan, Wales.

Aston Martin has celebrated a significant milestone with the first production DBX SUV rolling off the line at the new facility in St Athan, Wales. The event also marks the first-ever “Made in Wales” vehicle for the Aston Martin Lagonda brand.

Having already secured 2000 orders since its reveal last November and with high hopes for more as demand for SUV’s continues to climb at a record pace, Aston Martin’s first-ever SUV has been a long time coming and undoubtedly holds great expectations as they look for ways to reach profitability.

First sketched into existence back in 2015, the new Aston Martin DBX SUV required a new production facility, which was found in the form of an ex-Ministry of Defence site in St Athan, Wales.

Speaking at the new site in St Athan, Aston Martin Interim Chief Operating Officer, Keith Stanton shared, “It is a real privilege to be here today to witness the completion of the first production Aston Martin DBX. I’m extremely proud of the Aston Martin team who have worked so hard to transform this ex-Ministry of Defence site into a world-class car manufacturing facility, to now be producing cars, it is testament to the resilience and fortitude of everyone at Aston Martin. It is an honour to see the first DBX come off the line and my only regret is that everyone who works for this incredible brand can’t be here to witness it.”

Also speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates shared, “This is a historic moment for Aston Martin and for Wales. It is also a huge win for the Welsh Government’s can-do attitude. The DBX is an exceptional vehicle from one of the world’s most luxury car brands, and it will be central to this iconic company’s growth plan and ambitions for the future. I could not be more proud to see this fantastic SUV being made in Wales and rolling off the production line. It also speaks volumes for the dedication and skills of the world class work force we have right here in Wales.”

Although the completion of Aston Martin’s first production DBX marks the UK brand’s first “Made in Wales” vehicle, Aston Martin has reported approximately 80% of the new DBX’s will shipped and made available to overseas dealers.

Like many other automakers, Aston Martin announced job cuts earlier this year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it was expected these would most likely affect the Gaydon-based production plant rather than the new DBX production plant in St Athan to ensure deliveries of the first 2021 models continued as scheduled.

First deliveries of the 2021 Aston Martin DBX model to customers will begin later this month with prices starting from £158,000 (UK), $189,900 (USA), €193,500 (EU) and AU$357,000 (Australia).
