Dario Franchitti Joins the Gordon Murray T.50 Supercar Project
Race legend Dario Franchitti joins Gordon Murray Automotive as a development driver of the T.50 Supercar.
Earlier this year, the legendary designer of the McLaren F1 announced the formation of his own supercar company and launched his new design – the Gordon Murray T.50 Supercar. While the initial prototype and design have been revealed, it still has further development and testing to undergo before final production begins in the first half of 2022.
As part of this development process, Gordon Murray Automotive has announced legendary race champion Dario Franchitti will join the team with dual roles. Franchitti will act as the company’s development driver and also as a brand ambassador and spokesman who will be hosting a series of videos and assisting with track-day events with customers of the T.50s.
“I have been a friend and admirer of Dario for many years and I am delighted that he has joined the Gordon Murray Group family,” shared Professor Gordon Murray. “His role will help us to hone the T.50 as the most driver-centric supercar ever built. His skills as a driver need no introduction but his well-known appreciation of road cars is rare for a racing driver in my experience. His relationship with our business will go far deeper. Dario will help us fully establish the Gordon Murray brand, with input and involvement in all future product decisions. We will also be putting his TV presenting skills to good use by producing videos that will enable everyone to follow the development and production of the T.50 and the racing-focused T.50s.”
“As a passionate road car fan, it’s exciting to be involved in the development of the T.50.” explained Dario Franchitti. “It is going to be such an incredible car. A supercar designed and engineered with no compromises. It’s also a dream come true to work with and learn from Gordon Murray who is someone I have always had the greatest admiration for, both as an engineer and a friend. I’m looking forward to working closely with Gordon and his brilliant team.”
Described by Gordon Murray as his “ultimate car design,” the limited edition T.50 is said to improve on the McLaren F1 in “every conceivable way” and is created using a light-weight carbon fiber monocoque body and the worlds lightest and highest-revving V12 engine to date.
Only 100 Gordon Murray T.50’s will be built at a starting price of £2.36m and production scheduled for January 2022. The track-focused race version T.50s will be limited to only 25 models and is expected to begin production in 2023.
