Rolex has been teasing a new release of the Submariner, and it has finally come to light – the 2020 Submariner editions in a redesigned case and remodeled bracelet.

Featuring a slightly larger 41mm case, the new Oyster Perpetual Submariner powered by the caliber 3230 is available with a black dial and matching rotatable bezel while the new Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date powered by the caliber 3235 is available in several more new versions.

Entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, the self-winding mechanical movements of the Calibre 3230 and 3235 incorporate the Chronergy escapement, patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, they are also insensitive to magnetic fields.

With this new release, only the Oyster Perpetual Submariner with black dial and matching black bezel is available without the date, while the Submariner Date models are available in several different versions:

  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner – OysterSteel (126610)
    • Oystersteel with black dial and black rotatable bezel
    • Oystersteel with black dial and black rotatable bezel (Date)
    • Oystersteel with black dial and green rotatable bezel (Date)
  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Two-tone Rolesor (Oystersteel & 18k yellow gold – 126613)
    • Black dial and black bezel (Date)
    • Blue dial and blue bezel (Date)
  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner 18K Yellow Gold (126618)
    • Black dial and black bezel (Date)
    • Blue dial and blue bezel (Date)
  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner White gold (126619)
    • Black dial with blue bezel (Date)

As a refresher on the origins of the Submariner, the watch is linked closely to the development of deep-sea diving in the 1940s. The popularity of scuba diving led to Rolex developing and manufacturing a waterproof chronometer wristwatch and the Oyster case it patented in 1926.

By the 1950s, Rolex had begun collaborating with diving pioneers of the time and experimenting with various technological advances that led to the introduction of the “Submariner” in 1953 – the first diver’s wristwatch that was waterproof to a depth of 330ft (100 meters).

By 1969 the Submariner Date was introduced, and the waterproof rating had been increased to a depth of 660ft (200 meters) and increased again to 1,000ft (300meters) by 1979. Several other features had also been added, including luminescent detailing.

Now nearly 70 years later, the Submariner continues building on its strong dive heritage with a new caliber offering an updated 70 hours (compared to the 48 hours of the previous movement), new OysterSteel bracelet, and subtle design updates.

The latest Rolex Submariner and Submariner Date will be available from 2 September worldwide.
