GP Ice Race 2020 Bringing The Best of Ice Racing To The Austrian Alps
For the second year running, the newly revived GP Ice Race held in Zell am See will bring motoring enthusiasts together for a weekend of ice racing motorsport events.
Spectators will have the chance to see some of the world’s most exciting racing, road and classic cars take part in events including the standard racing section, held on a purpose-built 600 meter race track at an old airfield. Another popular event will be the skijöring competition, a crazy event where skiers are towed behind a car through a designated ice & snow track.
The origins of this eye-raising event actually dates back to the Olympic Winter Games of 1928 held in St. Moritz. In those early days, skiers were originally towed behind horses at maximum speed across the ice but it wasn’t long before skiers moved onto motorized (and much faster) methods including cars and motorbikes.
While the event did experience a temporary 45 year pause between the years 1974 – 2019, the great-grandson of Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche and his business partner Vincenz Greger, felt the event would bring value to the community of Zell am See and sought to revive the event once again, with the first being held in 2019.
Amongst the many cars racing this year, Bentley Motors will be bringing a special ice race edition Continental GT which will be driven by Catie Munnings, Junior World Rally Championship driver and winner of the FIA European Rally Championship Ladies Trophy.
Catie Munnings commented, “The opportunity to race with Bentley at Zell am See is one that I couldn’t miss. I’m completely blown away by the car, and I actually still can’t believe I’m getting let loose in a Bentley to do an ice race”.
The Ice Race Continental GT will be running in livery that pays homage to its record breaking compatriot from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2019 and shares the same factory built W12 twin-turbocharged TSI engine.
Tickets for the event can be purchased directly via their website.
