Australian based superyacht design house Sorgiovanni Design reveals new Frontier explorer yacht concept capable of polar exploration.

With twenty-three years of yacht design under his belt and an induction into the Australian Superyacht Industry Hall of Fame, Sam Sorgiovanni is no newcomer to the superyacht game, so when his design firm announces its latest explorer yacht you know it has some serious design clout behind it.

Named Frontier, the latest concept has been designed to “discover new and unknown civilisations” and with the steel hull featuring a certified ice-breaker reverse bow capable of slicing through ice caps, it’s a safe bet to guess it’s destined for some of the most extreme climates found at either end of the Earth’s poles.

However unlike some explorer yacht designs that prioritize functionality over appearance, Sorgiovanni has still managed to maintain exceptionally sleek lines in the design of Frontier and a warm and casual aesthetic that will be appealing to owners who desire rugged exploration capabilities without having to sacrifice comfort and luxury finishings.

Speaking on the design, Sam Sorgiovanni shared, “Australians have a casual lifestyle that focuses on the sea, sand and climate. This translates so well to life on a yacht – this yacht, in particular, perfectly depicts the wish of being close to the elements in a relaxed way, with a taste for discovering unknown lands.”

Not to be pigeon-holed, Frontier also ticks all the right boxes to be the perfect entertainer with the inclusion of an outdoor bar and jacuzzi on the observation deck, a nine-meter pool on the owner’s deck, a cinema for 20, games room on the main deck and a two-story beach club below with a massage room, sauna, steam room and direct access to the tender garage.

One of Frontier’s stand-out features is undoubtedly the unique retractable helicopter landing pad. Mounted on hydraulic jacks, the 15sqm platform forms part of the entertainment area of the pool when not in use, but when required can slide out fully to receive an incoming helicopter.

For the interior spaces, Sorgiovanni has focused on using sustainable materials where possible and taken inspiration from his homeland of Australia, choosing to use bark, seeds, and timber from fast-growing woods, local stone, and even eggshells.

Built to accommodate 12 guests in 6 double staterooms with individual ensuites, Frontier’s guest staterooms are situated on the lower deck while the owner’s master suite and private office are found on the upper-deck and offer direct access to the main pool. Frontier also has accommodation for 34 crew in 17 double cabins.

Although still only in the initial concept phase, Frontier is designed to be powered by twin diesel engines with a top speed of 20 knots.

Sorgiovanni also envisions potential owners of Frontier will seek further eco-friendly features to make it the ultimate globetrotting explorer yacht.
