Every two years the prestigious Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is held two weeks before the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco.

One of the biggest highlights on the classic-car racing calendar, the colorful event draws a passionate crowd of owners, drivers and spectators to watch over 200 historic grand prix race cars from the 1930’s to 1970’s as they tear around the Monaco track competing in their era-specific series.

Taking over from Chopard as the official timekeeper at this year’s historic event, TAG Heuer had planned to reveal a new limited-edition Monaco watch to celebrate the iconic race and their long-standing association with race organizers Automobile Club de Monaco.

However, like so many other events around the world, the 12th edition of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique has now been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but for a certain few TAG Heuer Monaco fans, the limited edition Grand Prix de Monaco Historique may still be a very attractive consolation prize until the next race in 2022.

Originally launched in 1969, the Monaco was named after the Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco event and was the world’s first waterproof automatic chronograph with a square case. It got its big break on the wrist of racing legend Steve McQueen in the filming of the “Le Mans” movie released in 1971 and aside from a few brief years of discontinuation, has never looked back.

Limited to 1000 pieces, the new TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco Historique edition is powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre Heuer 02 movement offering 80 hours of use and features a stainless steel case with a striking red and white color scheme.

In the top right hand corner of the crimson watch face, astute wearers will notice a small silver vehicle (the logo of the historic race) appearing to make a mad dash around the silver dial.

References to the race also appear on the caseback in the form of the word logo printed on the transparent sapphire glass back and each piece is engraved with a small number denoting which of the 1000 pieces the owner has purchased.

While the fast pace historic race has now been canceled, interested watch buyers can still view the TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco Historique at the Automobile Club de Monaco and place pre-orders before the official release in July.
