The New €3.2 million Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Unveiled
The new €3.2 million Bugatti Chiron Super Sport joins the Chiron family as a production sibling of the record-breaking Chiron Super Sport 300+ edition.
The new Bugatti Chiron Super Sport is the latest member to join the Chiron family and, with a focus on top speed, is reminiscent of the record-breaking Super Sport 300+ edition.
Powered by an overhauled version of Bugatti’s 8.0-liter W16 engine, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport produces the same 1,578bhp as the Super Sport 300+ and can achieve top speeds of 273mph and a 0-124mph sprint time of 5.8 seconds thanks to new turbochargers (and that’s with a speed limiter in place).
“With the Chiron Super Sport, we are following our long-standing tradition of combining top speed with absolute luxury,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti. “The Chiron Super Sport stands for increased comfort and elegance coupled with even greater performance and higher speeds. With this new creation, we established another distinct personality within the Chiron family. It is the essence of what we learned and developed in recent years – the ultimate grand tourer.”
Where models like the Chiron Pur Sport are designed for cornering and “lateral agility,” the new Chiron Super Sport prioritizes top speed and has been aerodynamically tweaked from the front splitter to the rear diffuser to achieve this mission.
Specifically, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport is designed to offer maximum downforce alongside minimal drag and includes features like a new extended rear known as a “long tail” to hold the laminar airflow to the bodywork for as long as possible and a new exhaust pipe configuration to boost the effect of the diffuser.
“If we can generate downforce with the diffuser, there is no need for us to generate it with the drag-inducing wings. This means we can retract the wing as far as possible in Top Speed mode for a drive with minimal drag,” explains Frank Heyl.
Other aerodynamic features on the Chiron Super Sport include side air curtains alongside the air intakes resulting in improved airflow from the front to the wheel arches, keeping it as close to the side of the vehicle, minimizing drag, and improving the airflow over the side radiators.
Likewise, each fender’s nine exhaust air holes exist to release the air pressure from the front wheel wells, thereby generating streamlined downforce at the front axle.
Aside from aerodynamics, the Chiron Super Sport has also been optimized for top speed driving through the use of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires which offer greater rigidity and smoothness than the grip-optimized tires of the Chiron Pur Sport (and are also the only tires to be able to consistently handle speeds up to 310mph).
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport is priced at €3.2 million and is expected to begin production shortly at Molsheim, France, with deliveries scheduled for early 2022.
