While the reveal of the futuristic Vision AVTR (“Advanced Vehicle Transformation”) came as a surprise to most at this years annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, in hindsight it was a very clever way to show off Mercedes Benz’s futuristic design capabilities while offering a subtle side note reminder of the impending movie sequel (that most of us had probably even forgotten was happening if we’re honest).

Presented to around 2000 visitors at the Park Theater, MGM Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG was joined onstage by guests, including the Director of AVATAR, James Cameron who consulted on the concept design for the autonomous electric vehicle that features 33 “bionic flaps” (the scales that move up and down/glow) and wheels inspired by the “seeds of the Tree of souls”.

Built with sustainable materials and designed to be “zero impact”, the four door concept car will be able to travel over 400 miles per charge and is powered by organic battery technology developed using graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is completely free of rare earths and metals and can be composted at the end of its life-cycle.

In regards to passenger experience, the inside cabin is immersed in intuitive AR technology that offers hours of entertainment for passengers to pass time if piloted in autonomous mode however if the driver wishes to take control, they can also do so via one hand on the touch pad in the centre console.

Not sure if the Na’vi would be willing to give up their banshees for this just yet, but these designs are making future earth travel look good anyway.
