Parents: André Starck (industrial aeronautics) and Jacqueline Lanourisse
Studied at: Notre Dame de Sainte Croix in Neuilly and l’Ecole Nissim de Camondo in Paris, France

Often considered one of the most creative multi-disciplinary designers of our time, Philippe Starck’s intense fascination with humanity has given life to over 10,000 creations including the iconic Juicy Salif lemon squeezer and Louis Ghost chair, clothing, homewares, electric bikes and even the 1992 Winter Olympics torch  – always with the conviction that his design respects nature and the future of humankind.

One of Starck’s first major projects was the renovation of the Le Palais de l’Elysée in Paris at President François Mitterrand’s request.

Nowadays his work can be found everywhere across the globe – in hotel interior designs like the SLS Boutique hotels, restaurant interiors like Katsuya and at sea in the form of Motor Yacht “A” and Sailing Yacht “A”.

With a long list of accolades to his name, including the Grand Prix National de la Création industrielle and the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects, Starck considers himself as “a Japanese architect, an American art director, a German industrial designer, a French artistic director, an Italian furniture designer”

“Subversive, ethical, ecological, political, humorous…this is how I see my duty as a designer.”

Juicy Salif Lemon Squeezer

The Juicy Salif Lemon Squeezer was created as a commission between Starck and Alessi, an Italian design house. Originally Alessi had requested a tray, however while holidaying on the Amalfi coast, Starck was struck with an idea for the lemon squeezer while ordering calamari and lemon for lunch and the initial concept was quickly scribbled down onto a napkin.

Twenty years on, that same napkin is now in the Alessi Museum and depicts the very first sketches of the iconic squeezer.

Louis Ghost Chair

Launched in 2002, Starck’s iconic transparent design of the Louis Ghost chair was a commission for design house Kartell and drew inspiration from the armchair of the 18th century King Louis XVI.

It has since has become the most widely sold design chair, selling over 2 million pieces.

“Creation, whatever shape it takes, must make life better for the largest number of people possible.”
