Ferrari has unveiled the SF90 Spider, the brand’s most powerful series-production supercar to date and their first-ever plug-in hybrid with a retractable hardtop.
In what has fast become the usual for 2020, Ferrari has unveiled the spider version of the SF90 Stradale in a special online event, ensuring the “Ferraristi” have the chance to get a good look at the brand’s first-ever plug-in hybrid with a retractable hardtop.
Powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine and three electric motors that deliver 986 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, the new Ferrari SF90 Spider boasts a top speed of 211 mph and has a projected 0-62 time of 2.5 seconds.
Essentially the new Ferrari SF90 has the same specifications and record-breaking performance of its Stradale sibling but with the ability to enjoy the thrill of open-top driving. Featuring a lightweight aluminum retractable hardtop (RHT) for optimal noise insulation inside the cabin when closed, the ridigity of the RHT means the roof does not deform at high speeds. Taking only 14 seconds to raise or lower, the retractable hardtop can even be deployed by the driver while driving.
In a first for a Ferrari production spider, the SF90 Spider comes with plug-in hybrid technology and combines the internal combustion engine (Ferrari’s most powerful V8 turbo built to date) with two electric motors at the front to produce a maximum of 1,000 cv, putting the new Spider at the top of Ferrari’s road cars.
Stylewise, the SF90 Spider features the same silhouette and many of the distinctive styling elements of the SF90 Stradale but with slight modifications to accommodate the stowable roof. These include a cockpit that is slightly moved forward, a more raked windscreen, and a roofline that is 20mm lower.
Some owners will also be pleased to know that the heart of their SF90 Spider, the incredibly powerful V8 engine, will be on display at all times and is clearly visible regardless of whether the retractable hardtop is deployed or retracted.
For owners wanting a track-worthy SF90 Spider, the same Assetto Fiorano package available to the SF90 Stradale can be selected, which includes upgrades to Multimatic shock absorbers, the addition of high-performance weight-saving materials like carbon fiber and titanium, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for improved track performance in the dry. The Assetto Fiorano package also gives owners the option to select a two-tone livery.
Ferrari is currently taking orders for the new SF90 Spider, with deliveries starting in the Q3 of 2021. Production is said to be limited, but no specific numbers are confirmed as of yet.
