Mclaren set to recall up to 2763 vehicles including the 2019 Senna, 2020 Mclaren GT, and certain 720S models to inspect a potential fire hazard.

With “Stay Home” orders in place around most parts of the world amidst a shifting COVID-19 landscape, many McLaren owners have been forgoing long winding country drives for over a month but that time-frame could look even longer for some after a new voluntary recall from McLaren.

In the Recall Report issued by the U.S National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, McLaren Automotive has identified a potential problem in certain models including the 570GT, GT, 720S, and Senna, that may cause a fuel leak and possible fire risk “in the presence of an ignition source” if not addressed.

The part in question is the “Noise, Vibration and Harshness” (NVH) foam pad mounted underneath the fuel tank that could potentially absorb moisture and corrode the fuel tank, increasing the chances of a fuel leak and potential fire.

The specific Model & Years identified include:

  •  All McLaren 570GT’s produced between 1st May 2016 and 9th January 2019 equipped with an NVH foam pad (potentially 373 vehicles)
  • All McLaren 720S’s produced between 23rd October 2016 and 11th February 2020 equipped with an NVH foam pad (potentially 2,008 vehicles)
  • All McLaren GT’s produced between 10th September 2019 and 20th March 2020 equipped with an NVH foam pad (potentially 225 vehicles)
  •  All McLaren Senna’s produced between 22nd June 2018 and 6th December 2019 equipped with an NVH foam pad (potentially 157 vehicles)

McLaren has only identified two 570GT models to date with the known issue due to owner reports of smelling fuel caused by corroded fuel tanks. No fires have been directly linked to the known issue however but McLaren still decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall on models utilizing the same NVH pad as a precaution.

Owners will be contacted by McLaren in due course and instructed to contact their dealer to arrange inspection of their vehicle.

The McLaren 720S, 570GT, and Senna models will have the NVH foam pads removed and the fuel tank inspected to determine if there is any corrosion on the surface of the fuel tank and will be replaced at no charge if necessary.

A remedy for the GT vehicles is yet to be finalized.
