New Pagani Huayra Roadster BC
The Huayra BC Roadster teaser’s caption, calls it “A tremendous science and design challenge.”
3 years on, The Pagani Huayra ‘BC’ named a after Benny Caiola, Horacio Pagani’s first customer, has now become a topless monster, something akin to the shirtless Incredible Hulk.
Scheduled to see its first public showing at Monterey Car Week next week Pagani Huayra Roadster BC started life as a one-off project for one particular unnamed Pagani customer. For the estimated $3.5 million USD price, the company expressed doubts about making more than one of these removable hardtop hypercars. Thanks to some strategic sneak peeks, a good number of customers let Pagani know that they wanted one, and so the company decided to commit to a total build of 40 roadsters.
The AMG tuned twin turbo 6.0-liter V12 sees the Huayra Roadster BC pumping out an enormous 800 horsepower (596 kilowatts) and 1050 Nm of torque. That’s a modest improvement of 50 hp and 36 lb-ft over the BC Coupe. All that additional power transfers to the rear wheels via a seven-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox with a lightweight single clutch. The single clutch setup is 35 percent lighter than the usual dual-clutch. With the 130 ‘S 65 Final Edition’ cars from Mercedes finishing production, this will be the only way to join the V12 AMG club.
According to the car’s spec sheet, the Roadster BC is 30 kgs lighter than the regular Roadster. The weight loss comes courtesy of the wide use of Carbo-Triax HP62 Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 materials in the monocoque body. Other weigh-reducing features include tubular steel front and rear subframes and a forged aluminum alloy independent wishbone with helical springs and electronic controlled shock absorbers. That plus other impressive engineering feats helps keep the curb weight to a relatively light 1,217 kilograms.
The titanium exhaust system has a total of 6 exhaust tips. The usual quad tips as per the coupe version, plus two more hidden in the rear diffuser. As Pagani explains, there are “two extra direct outlets from the catalytic converters to exploit the blown diffuser principle and generate further downforce.”
In addition to handling, the Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires designed specifically for Pagani, also help the Roadster BC to generate up to 1.9Gs of max lateral force in corners. That ranks among the highest Gs seen in any production car. The Bugatti Chiron, for comparison’s sake, only produces 1.5Gs of max grip. Pagani doesn’t have an official 60 time, but given that the coupe gets there in about 2.5 seconds, the Roadster should see 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
With only 40 units to be made, Pagani hasn’t announced that the car is sold out, so one could assume some of the cars are still available.
