€16.5 Million Sales at RM Sotheby’s Paris 2020 Auction

Held during Paris Rétromobile Week, this year’s annual RM Sotheby’s Paris Auction saw 75% of all cars go under the hammer for a total €16.5 million in sales.

Gathering on a Wednesday night in a bustling auction room at Place Vauban, Les Invalides, bidders from over 41 different countries registered for the chance to own one of the many classic, sports cars and hypercars on offer.

The “Poster Car Collection” was of particular interest, featuring 21 iconic cars from various decades. Remarkably all except 1 car sold at auction for a total of €6,437,459, exceeding well above the pre-sale estimated prices.

German sports cars from the 1950’s-60’s also attracted significant attention throughout the evening, with a 1958 BMW 507 Series II signed by designer Albrecht von Goertz achieving the top price of the night at €1,996,250.

Other notable sales from the night:

  • 1964 Porsche 904 GTS surpassed its pre-sale estimate and sold for €1,917,500
  • 1954 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing from the Poster Car Collection with early racing history sold for €1.07 million
  • 1957 Mercedes 300 SL Roadster, after 23 years with its previous owner, sold for €764,375
  • 2012 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport finished in two-tone Bright White and Pearl Night Blue (11th of 48 Veyron Super Sports) sold for €1.52 million
  • 1992 Jaguar XJ220 exceeded its pre-sale estimate and sold for €398,750

Interestingly, a 2015 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, estimated to be in the ballbark of €4,500,000 – 5,500,000, was passed in after bids failed to reach reserve. Only last year a similar Veneno sold for a record breaking $8,337,182 at the 2019 Bonhams Bonmont auction.

While still achieving a significant result for this years auction, total sales value at this years Paris auction were down significantly from last years record breaking €32.4 million in sales (which included a 1987 Ferrari F40 LM world record sale of €4.842.500 and a 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport going for €2.030.000).
