First introduced as a concept car at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the new Ghibli Hybrid is finally here and brings the Ghibli into an electrified era while still retaining its signature Maserati engine sound.

Coming in 80kg’s lighter than its petrol counterpart, the new Ghibli Hybrid has a maximum power output of 330hp and delivers 450Nm of torque at 1,500rpm, allowing it to reach 0-62mph(100km/h) in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 158mph(255km/h)

Having already sold over 100,000 units of the original Ghibli since its launch in 2013, Maserati chose the Ghibli sedan to launch its electric hybrid evolution and enlisted the help of the Centro Stile Maserati team.

Working off the original Ghibli, the Centro Stile Maserati team tweaked the exterior design adding new cobalt blue exterior detailing on the air vents and brake calipers, new modern boomerang style tail lamps inspired by the 3200 GT and Alfieri concept car and an updated front grille.

On the interior, the Maserati Intelligent Assistant multimedia system has been updated, and the center touch screen upgraded from 8”4 to 10”1. New dial and instrument clusters have been added along with a distinctive blue detail stitching throughout the car.

In terms of the hybrid system, after years of research at the Maserati Innovation Lab of Modena, the team decided to use a 4 cylinder BSG 48V hybrid system with a 48-volt alternator and electric supercharger (e-Booster). Combined with a rear-mounted battery, this particular hybrid system offers the performance of a 6 cylinder petrol engine with the low engine emission, efficiency, and responsiveness (at low speeds ) of a 6 cylinder diesel engine.

As Maserati’s first electric hybrid, the Ghibli Hybrid marks the beginning of their electric journey with the company announcing plans to move towards an all-electric future for Maserati – starting with the first all-electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio’s debuting in 2021.

The Maserati Ghibli Hybrid will be available from September for European clients with other countries to follow and pricing to be announced.
