URWERK Unveils Star Wars C-3PO Inspired UR-100 Gold Limited Edition Watch
Swiss watchmaker URWERK unveils Star Wars inspired UR-100 Gold Edition and is auctioning off the first watch to raise funds for COVID-19.
With a golden C-3PO inspired URWERK UR-100 watch being revealed on May 4th, the unofficial Star Wars Day for all film buffs (May the Fourth Be With You), it comes as no surprise that someone at the Swiss watchmaker is a fan of all things intergalactic.
That person is Martin Frei, co-founder of URWERK who explains, “Science fiction has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration since the creation of URWERK. I have been a sci-fi geek since childhood. My father was an engineer and worked on incredible projects, including the Apollo Lunar Rover. He was my hero and left me his love of the cosmos and his dreams.”
Launched in September 2019, the URWERK UR-100 has been released in a steel, black-coated steel and gun-metal edition however this is the first time it has been created in the same golden tones as C-3PO with each watch case being cut from a solid block of 2N yellow gold.
Housed in a 41mm slim-line case that borrows design notes from the angles of Han Solo’s Millenium Falcon, the URWERK UR-100 Gold Edition is a highly sophisticated piece of machinery with rotating worlds operating under its glass dome.
Like other URWERK UR-100 editions, the 2N Gold edition has a 48 hour power reserve and utilizes a satellite time system that unless you understand how it works you’ll find yourself about as lost as someone trying to figure out the Star Wars universe timeline for the first time.
Each of the three rotating satellites indicates an hour however the one you’ll want to take careful note of is the one with the bold red arrowhead attached and positioned at the bottom of the watch (facing the wearer). This one indicates the current hour while the arrowhead points to the correct neon green minute as it slides in an anti-clockwise direction.
Being an interstellar design, the designers at URWERK have also included a few other unique features that are a useful reminder of just how far and fast our small earth has traveled in the 20 minutes it took to decide what to watch on Netflix.
After each of the red minute arrowheads passes the 60 minute mark, they disappear and then reappear again on two engraved displays found on each side of the raised golden edges encasing the satellites:
The first display at 9 o’clock marks the 555 kilometers (345 miles) traveled along the equator during the last 20 minutes of the earth’s rotation, while the second display at 3 o’clock is an indication of the 35,740 kilometers (22,208 miles) just traveled by the earth in the last 20 minutes of its orbits around the sun.
The Urwerk UR-100 Yellow Gold Edition is a limited edition of 25 pieces and retails for CHF 58,000 (approx US$60,000).
There is however one special piece, the very first UR-100 Gold edition engraved with “Fight C19” that will be auctioned on May 8 on URWERK’s website, with all proceeds going to organizations that are fighting the good fight against the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The auction will begin at 4pm Geneva time on Friday May 8 and close 4 PM on Sunday the 10th of May. The winning bidder will have the opportunity to help select the organizations to benefit from the donation.
