The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Is Designed to Be Chauffeur Driven

The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is more luxurious than the standard S-Class sedan and, with the Chauffeur package included, makes it an attractive option for the owner that needs to be driven daily.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new top-of-the-line 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which sees the wheelbase extended by seven inches (18cm) compared to the standard Mercedes-Benz S Class, and luxurious features like the Executive Seating and Chauffeur Package come as standard.

Designed to combine the Mercedes-Benz flagship model’s high-tech solutions with the exclusivity and tradition of Maybach, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was first launched in 2015 and has already sold approx. 60,000 vehicles to date.

Powered by a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 496hp and 516lb-ft of torque and paired with AIRMATIC air suspension, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class provides an ultra-smooth ride and remains popular to this day as a “car to be driven in” thanks to the comfort afforded by the extended rear area and the luxurious upgrades.

“With the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, we are emphasizing the progressive, modern approach of its exclusive product portfolio shortly before the 100th anniversary of Mercedes-Maybach automobiles,” says Dirk Fetzer, head of Mercedes-Maybach product management. “As they did then, today’s customers have high expectations of their exclusivity and individuality, elegant design and first-class standard of finish, all based on the latest technology. Especially with respect to comfort, safety and design, the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has unique selling features in the hotly contested luxury segment.”

Easily recognizable by the front chrome radiator grille marked “MAYBACH” and the distinctive bonnet with its chrome fin and wider rear doors, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has an elegant appearance, which can be further customized with the option of a two-tone paint finish. Other optional extras include electrically operated comfort rear doors.

The interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is essentially based on the new interior design of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and shares the same sculptured appearance of the dashboard, center console, and armrests. Owners have the option of adding Ambience Lighting that features throughout the interior cabin.

In the latest model, the infotainment system MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) is even more personal and intuitive to use. On request, the MBUX Interior Assist can also be equipped in the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

Designed to recognize the intentions of the occupants of the vehicle, MBUX Interior Assist recognizes eye-direction, hand gestures, and the body language of the occupants to assist with automatic vehicle functions as the situation requires. The Mercedes‑Maybach S-Class can also recognize movements and gestures by the rear occupants with the help of 3D laser cameras in the roof liner. For example, the belt extender for the outer rear seats automatically offers up the seat belt when MBUX Interior Assist recognizes the occupant’s intention to reach for the belt by hand movements.

Deliveries of the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are expected to begin mid-2021, although no pricing has been announced.

Carroll Shelby’s 1965 427 Cobra Sold for $5.94 Million at Auction

It’s not every day you get to drive home a piece of automotive history, but that’s precisely what the new owner of Carroll Shelby’s own 427 Cobra Roadster would be doing as he sat in the same seat that the legendary automaker had occupied for over 40 years.

Listed by Mecum Auctions as one of their “Main Attractions,” Carroll Shelby’s personal 427 Cobra was sure to attract attention on the auction floor, and it didn’t fail to disappoint with the hammer eventually falling at US$5.94 million.

Owned by Carroll Shelby from its final construction in March 1966 until his passing in May 2012, Shelby’s personal 427 Cobra bore the serial number CSX3178 and was one of only five 427 Cobra’s to be originally finished in Charcoal Gray.

Initially purchased for $6,088 ($6273 including freight) in 1966, Mecum Auctions noted the vehicle arrived at Shelby’s LAX facility with a black interior and without an engine and transmission (standard procedure). On January 9, 1966, a work order was raised to “Build 427 Street Cobra CSX3178” before it was shipped to Carroll Shelby in Dallas on March 3, 1966.

A few years later, in 1972, Carroll Shelby’s friend and renowned Cobra specialist Mike McCluskey repainted Shelby’s 427 in Guardsman Blue and finished it with a gold nose). Shelby later had a more powerful aluminum-head 427 side-oiler engine with automatic transmission installed.

By 2002 Carroll Shelby was ready for another chance, and the 427 Cobra Roadster was given a fresh coat of paint in Red by the home crew at Shelby American in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bought from Shelby’s estate in 2016, the Shelby 427 Cobra underwent a complete Concours restoration by Cobra restorers Legendary Motor Company and was returned to its 1965 Charcoal Gray color and its original 427 configuration with a 4-speed.

The restorations took over 3,000 hours and were completed in 2019 under the watchful eye of Peter Klutt.

While this Shelby 427 Cobra is undoubtedly one of the most famous classic cars, it still didn’t beat the first-ever 427 Cobra’s sale price (chassis CSX2000), which sold for $13.75 million in 2016.

Bentley Announces Andreas Mindt as New Director of Design

Bentley has announced Audi’s former Head of Design Andreas Mindt will be joining the British based luxury automaker as the new Director of Design.

British based Bentley has announced Audi’s former Head of Exterior Design Andreas Mindt will be taking on the role of Bentley’s new Director of Design as of March 2021.

Succeeding Stefan Sielaff, who is departing to pursue other opportunities outside the Volkswagen Audi Group, Mindt will be moving from Audi, where he was responsible for the exterior design and launch of models like the E-Tron and Audi’s Q8 SUV during his six-year tenure, to Bentley where his priority will be to evolve the brand’s electric future.

Bentley Motors has already clearly outlined their Bentley100 mission to achieve full electrification of all their vehicles by 2030, which they will be hoping to accomplish with Mindt leading a team of approximately 50 design experts at Bentley’s UK headquarters in Crewe.

“Bentley is a jewel within the Volkswagen Group,” shared Andreas Mindt. “Designing a car, and a future, is always a process based on the performance of many, not one, and so I look forward to working with my colleagues to help define the next phase for Bentley, into an electrified future.”

Before his time with Audi, Mindt spent over 15 years as a crucial part of the design department at the Volkswagen Group headquarters in Wolfsburg, where he worked on leading projects for several Group brands and even had an early experience with Bentley back in 1999 designing the exterior of the iconic Bentley Hunaudières showcar.

Ares Design Reveals New Porsche 911 964 Turbo Restomod

Luxury coachbuilder ARES Design Modena has revealed their latest project – a one-off restomod based on the Porsche 911 964 Turbo.

Coming off the back of a big year that saw ARES Design Modena release their first-ever wholly designed supercars (the S1 Project and S1 Project Spyder), ARES has started 2021 strong with the reveal of a new one-off restomod project based on the Porsche 911 964 Turbo.

Launched in 1991, the Porsche 964 Turbo took some time to fans over (thanks in part to the 930 that bore the Turbo badge before it) but eventually found a place in the hearts of enthusiasts largely thanks to the unmissable whale-tail spoiler.

For this one-off design project, ARES Design Modena has refined the exterior of the 911 964 Turbo by modifying the ducktail spoiler and added new Fuchs-inspired alloy wheels (made famous by the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of the 1970s) for a retro feel. Meanwhile, under the hood, the Italian luxury coachbuilder has modified the 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with a more powerful turbine and intercooler to produce an upgraded 425Hp.

Inside, the cabin has been refitted with new leather and tartan houndstooth upholstery (inspired by historic Porsche race cars) along with new gauges and a PCCM infotainment system specially designed for classic Porsches.

As a one-off project, no price has been released for the Porsche 911 964 by ARES, but interested Porsche owners are welcome to contact ARES Design Modena for their own custom restomod quote.
