Watches & Wonders Geneva 2021 Physical Event Canceled Due to COVID-19

Watches & Wonders Geneva have announced the 2021 physical event will be canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic but will still host an online digital event April 7-13, 2021.

For the second time this year, event organizers of the newly launched Watches & Wonders show have contended with the ramifications of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and have now announced the cancellation of the Watches & Wonders 2021 event in Geneva, Switzerland.

The inaugural Watches & Wonders Geneva was originally set to launch in April this year but was rescheduled to 2021 as travel, and governmental restrictions made it unfeasible to continue with plans for a live event. As an alternative, Watches & Wonders organizers Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie pivoted to a digital event and instead hosted the online launches for the participating watch houses.

Hopeful the pandemic would have eased, and participants could soon travel and gather again, Watches & Wonders was rescheduled to 2021. Unfortunately, organizers have now announced the 2021 event has also befallen the same fate and will now be a digital-only event.

“In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Exhibitor Committee has decided to cancel the physical Salon that would have been held at Palexpo from April 7 to 13, 2021. The decision, taken in close consultation with the principal stakeholders, is seen as the most responsible course of action, given the current health crisis and uncertainties as to how the situation may evolve.”

While the 2021 digital event will still offer plenty of new releases from watch brands and a range of interactive activities for media, retailers, and exhibiting brand’s clients, Watches & Wonders organizers have promised the 2022 edition will be the largest watch event ever held in Geneva and are looking forward to welcoming everyone in person.

The newly-formed “HourUniverse” by the same organizers of the collapsed BaselWorld was also scheduled to be held in Geneva simultaneously with Watches & Wonders, so it remains to be seen how this impacts their decision on holding a live event in 2021.

MB&F FrogX Reimagines 10th Anniversary of HM3 Frog Watch

Initially launched in 2010, the new MB&F FrogX watch celebrates the 10th anniversary of the brand’s most popular model.

Ten years ago, MB&F introduced the amphibious inspired HM3 Frog in all its bug-eyed glory. It was one of the brand’s best sellers throughout its five-year run. Featuring two large “eyes” that rotated to display the hours and minutes and a broad grinning “smile,” MB&F’s Frog pushed the boundaries of design and looked ready to jump at a moment.

Now to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its creation, MB&F has created a special limited edition FrogX in three different colors with a new sapphire crystal case and a “secret that appears only under the right light”.

Like the previous Frog edition, two paper-thin domes milled out of light-weight black anodized aluminum indicate the hours and minutes and are housed under two sapphire crystal domes. What is different with the new FrogX model is that the entire case has now been crafted out of sapphire crystal (instead of only the domes combined with a metal case).

On both editions of the Frog, the curvature of the domed “eyes” has to be exactly right and the thickness of the crystal strictly controlled throughout so as not to distort the time display. With the new FrogX, however, the two sapphire domes are fused to the sapphire crystal upper case body, creating an additional level of difficulty.

Machining and polishing each case of HM3 FrogX requires weeks of intensive and meticulous work, a time-frame that would be significantly multiplied if not for MB&F’s experience in sapphire crystal design dating back to 2005.

Incorporating the distinctive HM3 engine built by watchmaker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, the FrogX still offers the wearer an uninterrupted view of the 22K gold and titanium winding rotor and the oscillations of the balance wheel but has forgone the date display to ensure the MegaWind rotor and domes are given enough real-estate on the dial.

To make it easier to read the time at night, the dome numbers are coated with Super-Luminova and appear like two glowing eyes of a wild tree frog peering out of the darkness in the Amazon.

Another unique attribute of the FrogX is the secret MB&F battle-axe “signal” that appears at just the right angle thanks to some clever light-sculpting techniques by Swiss company Rayform.

Using the FrogX’s crown (usually engraved with MB&F’s iconic battle-axe insignia), the smoothly polished crown has instead been sculpted at microscopic levels that allow light to be reflected in a highly specific way. By micro-forming a metal surface at levels nearly imperceptible to the human eye, Rayform’s technology allows direct incident light beams to be reflected in the battle-axe shape that can be viewed on any relatively uniform surface.

Limited to 10 pieces of each of the three versions (blue, purple or turquoise), the HM3 FrogX 10th anniversary limited editions are priced at CHF 138,000 each (approx USD$150,000) and available through retailers and MB&F directly.

This week luxury British automaker Aston Martin revealed they are teaming up with renowned architect Sir David Adjaye to collaborate on a collection of 5 luxury residences at 130 William, New York City.

While undoubtedly luxurious, the Aston Martin Residences at 130 William also come with a few extras for the auto-enthusiast, including a limited edition Aston Martin DBX SUV designed by Sir David Adjaye and the option to add a racing simulator room fit for a budding race driver.

Following on from their success with the Aston Martin Residences in Miami, the 130 William project marks the brand’s second real estate project, although it will be their first foray into the New York City real estate market. It also marks Sir David Adjaye’s first New York high-rise project.

“This is a fascinating project for the Aston Martin design team to work on and a great opportunity to collaborate with Sir David. It is our first real estate project in New York City but our second collaboration in real estate design after the Aston Martin Residences in Miami.” Says Marek Rechiman, Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer. “We can apply what we have learnt in Miami and also bring our unique automotive design skills to these beautiful luxury homes.”

Aston Martin Residences at 130 William New York City

Designed by British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, 130 William comprises 242 residences across 66 stories. Inspiration for both the exterior and interior design comes from New York’s historic masonry architecture, which has been translated into custom hand-cast façades with refined bronze detailing, and a contemporary interpretation of the stonework that characterized classic Manhattan architecture.

Located on the 59th and 60th levels of 130 William, the five Aston Martin Residences have been exclusively designed through the collaboration of Sir David Adjaye and the Aston Martin design team and will be furnished and decorated with materials, textiles, and furniture sourced from the Aston Martin Home collection by Italian based Formitalia.

Each home features a private, expansive outdoor balcony spanning the entire length of residence and uses hand-cast building façade to offer privacy, with bespoke screens also dividing the terraces into a series of distinct zones for dining and relaxing.

Stepping out of the elevator, residences are greeted by Aston Martin’s signature crosshatch pattern elegantly displayed in a bronze finish across the hallway. Beneath the bronze detailing is wallpaper designed by Adjaye Associates, while a bespoke smoked glass mirror created by Aston Martin Design reflects the skyline view.

Within each home, residents are presented with a grand living and dining room, featuring furnishings, textiles, and fittings curated by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman and Sir David Adjaye.

Opening out onto the outdoor living areas, the living room offers city-wide views, clean lines, and sleek furnishings from the Aston Martin Home Collection by Formitalia, with every piece made in Italy. The sofas and armchairs combine elements of leather, metal, and fabric, as well as beautiful detailing, to evoke the richly crafted and tactile qualities of Aston Martin’s automotive interiors.

Located adjacent to the Dining Room is an open plan kitchen which features custom textured blackened oak Italian cabinetry, state-of-the-art Gaggenau appliances, marble countertops hand-selected from the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, Italy, and a cantilevered Nero Marquina marble top, which provides additional bar seating.

The master bedroom offers crisp, clean lines and beautiful detailing, combined with warm, inviting materials to ensure it is a private sanctuary. The bedroom features an expansive bed with custom cashmere headboard cushions and slender metal detailing, alongside bedside tables and side tables by Formitalia. It also includes spacious walk-in closets, wall-mounted lighting by Boffi, a Flos light track system, and a lounge chair by Hans Wegner.

In terms of customization, new owners will have the option of turning one of the rooms (in the two and three-bedroom homes) into a racing simulator room, home office, library space, or another bedroom.

The simulator room is the perfect choice for true auto enthusiasts with Aston Martin Design collaborating with Curv Racing Simulators, a new British technology company founded by Darren Turner (three-time class winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Aston Martin and an industry-leading expert in racing simulation technology) to create the ultimate in luxury home racing simulators.

Alternatively, one of the rooms could be turned into a private office and library space designed for working and relaxing. A custom-designed desk is paired with a classic Eames chair, and the room also features a lounge chair by Swoon and stool by Space Copenhagen. The office provides generous storage and display spaces, including black wood shelves and cabinets with smoked glass placed alongside textured Salvatori marble walls.

Bathrooms include textured Italian Salvatori marble throughout. In the master bathroom, a Salvatori solid carved marble soaking tub and carved marble double vanity sinks are paired with a spacious walk-in shower and private water closet. Secondary bathrooms incorporate Grigio Versilia marble, and Bianco Carrera marble with powder rooms in a bamboo textured Grigia Versilia marble.

As part of the collaboration, Sir David Adjaye has also designed the “130 William Adjay Special Edition Aston Martin DBX” that will be included in the sale of each of the five limited-edition residences.

The 130 William Adjaye Special Edition Aston Martin DBX marks the first time that Aston Martin has collaborated with an architect on one of their signature vehicles’ custom fit-out. Taking inspiration from the materials, textures, and atmosphere of 130 William, Adjaye worked with Aston Martin to create a unique DBX design with highly crafted interiors and custom paintwork that reflected the building’s architecture.

The DBX Special Edition also marks the debut of real stone accents, with Grey “Pietra D’Avola” marble inlays matched with Satin Walnut wood.
