Rimac Automobili Ramps Up Production of Crash Test C_Two Electric Hypercar

Rimac Automobili has announced a new production line at their facility in Veliko Trgovišće Croatia as part of the continuing development of the C_Two electric hypercar.

Like many other car brands, Rimac Automobili didn’t get the chance to reveal their latest designs at this years canceled Geneva Motor Show but that hasn’t stopped the Croatian based company from moving forward and increasing the speed at which they produce their C_Two electric hypercar prototypes as they work towards the final validation and crash testing processes needed for worldwide homologation.

Required to prove that a car is roadworthy, automakers must build several prototypes to undergo a series of rigorous tests; including sending a perfectly decent car into a wall at a crash test facility.

The homologation process itself takes around three to four years from the first concept to full testing of prototypes and finally seeing the cars on the road.

So far, Rimac has been able to assemble four early prototype vehicles, but a further 13 are needed for the testing and homologation process, followed by another 10 pre-series cars which are hoped to be finalized this year.

Previously it had taken Rimac’s production team approx 10 weeks to produce each C_Two electric hypercar but in a recent reveal of their new production line, the team will now be able to cut this down to approx. 5 weeks.

Divided into five main zones, the new production line begins with the bonding of all brackets and fixing points onto the monocoque. Two people in each following zone then continue to build up the car piece-by-piece. Sub-assemblies like the powertrain, the dashboard, or the front radiator are built away from the line and delivered complete to be fitted.

Under the new production schedule, Rimac will now be able to build 4 new prototypes per month which will accelerate the production of the C_Two prototypes need for testing.

Mate Rimac, Founder and CEO, Rimac Automobili, said: “We have worked hard to bring the C_Two to the stage where it is now, and we want our customers all over the world to be able to experience the thrill of a 1,914hp all-electric hypercar. The only way we can do that is through a strict crash testing process requiring many different prototypes, each of which has its own purpose. While some cars will go straight from the production line to the crash testing facility, others will be used for different validation tests before hitting the wall. Only a handful of prototypes will not be crashed during this program. As we are ramping up prototype production, this new line is an absolutely necessary investment to streamline the process, and it’ll help us as we begin to deliver customer cars from next year.”

Although Rimac Automobili’s original plan to deliver customer cars at the end of this year was slightly thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic, under the improved production circumstances customer deliveries are on track for 2021.

Rimac also shows no signs of slowing down as business continues to scale up with Porsche increasing its ownership stake in the business to 15.5% and Hyundai Motor Group joining a growing list established partners of Rimac, including Koenigsegg, Automobili Pininfarina, and Aston Martin.

The Rolls-Royce Bespoke team is responsible for some of the most creative and imaginative editions designed. Now it looks like they’re adding a puzzling edition to keep car owners on their toes – the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection.

Limited to 50 vehicles in total, the special Wraith Kryptos, which comes in a unique “Kryptos Green”, incorporates a series of complex ciphers throughout the design for owners looking for a one-of-a-kind challenge.

“The name Kryptos is derived from Ancient Greek, referring to something unseen, hidden and coded, mythical even” shared Rolls-Royce Bespoke Designer, Katrin Lehmann. “Ciphers can be traced through millennia, capturing the imagination of some of the world’s most brilliant minds.

“As a designer, I’ve always been fascinated by the notion that you can communicate messages that are understood by only an elite few, using symbols, pictograms, and ciphers. Finding the key becomes integral to appreciating the full meaning of an item that can otherwise be viewed simply as a work of art.”

For the uninitiated, the encrypted cipher codes look like an intricate embellishment woven throughout the car design. However, for the code-breakers, the mysterious journey begins with dot-dash engraving found at the base of the Spirit of Ecstasy and carries on throughout the rest of the car and can be found in the external coach striping, embroidered headrests and “Matrix” look starlight headliner.

Owners who think they have cracked the code can submit their answers to the invite-only Rolls-Royce Whispers app. However, only two people at the Rolls-Royce headquarters are privy to the answer, kept in a sealed envelope in the safe of the Chief Executive Officer at Goodwood, West Sussex.

Sharing on the concept of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Torsten Müller-Ötvös, current CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented, “The brilliant and creative minds of our Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective have excelled once again, creating an extraordinarily contemporary and compelling iteration of Wraith. The Wraith Kryptos Collection, on first glance, is a statement of dynamism. On closer examination, a series of messages are hidden behind a unique Rolls-Royce cipher. No word has been given yet on pricing for the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection, but it’s most likely the Sherlock Holmes experience will come at a premium to the standard Wraith.

New Lamborghini Sián Roadster Hybrid: Only 19 Will Be Made

The already sold-out Lamborghini Sián Roadster is the company’s first hybrid roadster and is powered by a supercapacitor instead of lithium-ion cells.

Lamborghini has officially revealed the new Lamborghini Sián Roadster – inspired by the Sián FKP 37 hybrid concept car first unveiled at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

After a week of Lamborghini teasing their new release with ambiguous images across social media, the Italian supercar maker has come forth with the latest hybrid creation.

Limited to only 19 vehicles (which are already sold-out), the Sián Roadster is the company’s first hybrid roadster and powered by Lamborghini’s 6.5-liter V12 engine with unique hybrid technologies that can produce up to 819 horsepower (602kW) of thermal and electric power.

“The Sián Roadster encapsulates the spirit of Lamborghini,” says Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “It is the expression of breathtaking design and extraordinary performance, but most importantly embodies important future technologies. The Sián’s innovative hybrid powertrain heralds the direction for Lamborghini super sports cars, and the open-top Sián Roadster affirms a desire for the ultimate lifestyle Lamborghini as we move towards a tomorrow demanding new solutions.”

Unlike many other electric vehicle manufacturers, the Sián Roadster uses a supercapacitor developed in collaboration with MIT in Boston, which can store ten more times power than lithium-ion batteries and delivers optimum performance.

Located in the bulkhead between the cockpit and engine, the supercapacitor and e-motor system weighs only 34kg and works in conjunction with the V12 engine and a new powertrain.

The 48-volt e-motor itself delivers an additional 34hp for a total of 819hp (602kW), allowing the Sián Roadster to reach a top speed of over 218mph/350kmh and accelerate from 0 – 60mph 100kmh in less than 2.8 seconds.

The e-motor system also provides immediate response and supports low-speed manoeuvres (like reversing and parking) with electric power.

Another feature of the Sián Roadster is the regenerative braking system specially developed by Lamborghini. Unlike regular lithium-ion batteries, the supercapacitor’s symmetric behavior means that they can be charged and discharged with the same power, meaning the Sián’s energy storage system charges every time the vehicle brakes.

Each time the driver brakes, energy is stored in an instantly-available power boost which the driver can draw on immediately when accelerating away (making it 10% faster than a vehicle without this system).

Design-wise, the launch model of the Sián Roadster debuted in a color known as “Blu Uranas” with “Oro Electrum” wheels and “Blu Glauco” detailing, specially selected by Lamborghini’s Centro Stile and Ad Personam departments.

Carrying the unmistakable Lamborghini hexagonal DNA throughout the entire design, the Sián Roadster shares many of the same design elements of the coupe version, although it adds new details like the engine bonnet, the roll bar integrated into the front windscreen and aerodynamic wind vanes.

No prices have been announced yet, but with all 19 limited editions already sold, you’ll most likely have to sell a kidney to get one anyway.

The New James Bond Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation

Fancy yourself the next James Bond? The new Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation, complete with all its gadgets might just be your cup of tea.

After more than 50 years, Aston Martin has decided it is high time the gadget cars of the early James Bond make a comeback, with the first “Job 1” DB5 Goldfinger Continuation rolling off the production line (after a few extra modifications from the “Q’s” at Aston Martin).

Limited to 25 editions and built in collaboration with EON Productions, the new Goldfinger DB5 continuation model is the first new DB5 to be built in more than 50 years.

Originally built between 1963 and 1965, only 900 saloon examples of the classic Aston Martin DB5 were originally constructed, but thanks to its iconic appearance in the 1964 James Bond film “Goldfinger,” it has since been dubbed by some as “the most famous car in the world.”

Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “The DB5 is, without question, the most famous car in the world by virtue of its 50-plus year association with James Bond. To see, the first customer car finished, and realise that this is the first new DB5 we have built in more than half a century, really is quite a moment.

“It is a genuine privilege, and significant responsibility, to have been involved in the shaping of this new DB5 and to be helping to lead the creation of new versions of this automotive icon. I’m absolutely certain that the 25 lucky owners who are beginning to take delivery of these cars will be thrilled with them.”

These days the new DB5 Goldfinger Continuation takes around 4,500 hours of construction to create a working car complete with many of the operable gadgets from the movie, created by Bond film special effects supervisor Chris Corbould OBE.

Sharing the original DB5 styled aluminum exterior body panels and an authentic DB5 mild steel chassis structure, the new DB5 Goldfinger Continuations are powered by a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine and are only available in one exterior color – “Silver Birch,” just like the original James Bond car.

It’s important to note the Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation is not “road-legal,” (which is slightly disappointing if we’re honest and rules out about 98% of the locations you’d want to test out the gadgets). However, if its any consolation, you could still take it to a track to test out the following list of Bond-inspired gadgets.
